Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary on the "daily" in Daniel.

The SDA Bible Commentary is impossible to obtain in many places of the world, so here are some images of the Commentary dealing with the controversial issue of the "daily" in Daniel. . . . "God sent His angel [Gabriel] to move upon the heart of a farmer who had not believed the Bible, to lead him to search the prophecies. Angels of God repeatedly visited that chosen one, to guide his mind and open to his understanding prophecies which had ever been dark to God's people. The commencement of the chain of truth was given to him, and he was led on to search for link after link, until he looked with wonder and admiration upon the Word of God. He saw there a perfect chain of truth." Ellen G. White, Early Writings. 229 [brackets and emphasis supplied]

William Miller:

"From a farther study of the Scriptures, I concluded that the seven times of Gentile supremacy must commence when the Jews ceased to be an independent nation at the captivity of Manasseh, which the best chronologers assigned to B. C. 677; that the 2300 days commenced with the seventy weeks, which the best chronologers dated from B. C. 457; and that the 1335 days commencing with the taking away of the daily, and the setting up of the abomination that maketh desolate, [Daniel 12:11] were to be dated from the setting up of the Papal supremacy, after the taking away of Pagan abominations, and which, according to the best historians I could consult, should be dated from about A. D. 508. Reckoning all these prophetic periods from the several dates assigned by the best chronologers for the events from which they should evidently be reckoned, they all would terminate together, about A. D. 1843. I was thus brought, in 1818, at the close of my two years study of the Scriptures, to the solemn conclusion, that in about twenty-five years from that time all the affairs of our present state would be wound up." Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, April 18, 1854. 

"I began at Genesis and read on slowly; and when I came to a text that I could not understand, I searched through the Bible to find out what it meant. After I had gone through the Bible in this way, O, how bright and glorious the truth appeared. I found what I have been preaching to you. I was satisfied that the seven times [the 2520] terminated in 1843. Then I came to the 2300 days; they brought me to the same conclusion; but I had no thought of finding out when the Saviour was coming, and I could not believe it; but the light struck me so forcibly I did not know what to do. Now, I thought, I must put on spurs and breeching; I will not go faster than the Bible, and I will not fall behind it. Whatever the Bible teaches I will hold on to it."  (Review & Herald, vol. VIII) {April 24, 1856 UrSe, ARSH 9.15} [emphasis supplied]  

The 1843 CHART: “I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them; that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until His hand was removed. [THIS APPLIES TO THE CHART USED DURING THE 1843 MOVEMENT, AND HAS SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE CALCULATION OF THE PROPHETIC PERIODS AS IT APPEARED ON THAT CHART. THE NEXT SENTENCE EXPLAINS THAT THERE WAS AN INACCURACY WHICH IN THE PROVIDENCE OF GOD WAS SUFFERED TO EXIST. BUT THIS DOES NOT PRECLUDE THE PUBLICATION OF A CHART SUBSEQUENTLY WHICH WOULD CORRECT THE MISTAKE, AFTER THE 1843 MOVEMENT WAS PAST, AND THE CALCULATION AS THEN MADE HAD SERVED ITS PURPOSE.] “Then I saw in relation to the "daily" (Daniel 8:12) that the word "sacrifice" was supplied by man's wisdom, and does not belong to the text, and that the Lord gave the correct view of it to those who gave the judgment hour cry. When union existed, before 1844, nearly all were united on the correct view of the "daily"; but in the confusion since 1844, other views have been embraced, and darkness and confusion have followed. Time has not been a test since 1844, and it will never again be a test.” Early Writings, p.74. . . .(Capitalized comments in original) . . . . . . . . . . (Note : Keep in mind that the "corrected" 1850 CHART still had the "2520" prophecy on it, and also named the "daily" taken away in 508 A.D. as paganism.)

The bad logic of the "New View" escaped nearly everyone in this generation, until after 9/11/2001, when an "increase of knowledge" was then given to some diligent Bible students of our time, and they saw that IF the "daily" taken away was Christ's heavenly sanctuary ministry (by the papal use of the "Mass" beginning at about 200 A.D., thereby defiling the sanctuary), THEN the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary spoken of in Dan. 8:14, 2300 years later, could not begin until after 200 A.D., which would put the END of the 2300 years off until 2500 A.D., THEREFORE meaning that nothing at all happened on Oct. 22, 1844, and there is no reason for Seventh-day Adventism to exist at all!

Another explanation is that Jesus could not begin cleansing the heavenly sanctuary until after His ascension in 31 A.D., which would start the 2300 years in 31 A.D., meaning the 2300 years could not end until 2331 A.D., again showing that nothing at all happened in 1844, and there is no reason for Adventism to exist.

Notice in the right column of page 843 that after the Editors of the Commentary accurately present William Miller's use of Scripture and logical reasoning, they then cop-out (or opt-out) by saying, "Perhaps this is one of the passages of Scripture on which we must wait until a better day for a final answer."

Note the Commentary on Dan. 12:11 in the left column of page 881, "Those who hold to the view that the 'daily' refers to the continual priestly ministry of Christ . . . find no satisfactory explanation of this text."

"THE 2300 DAYS. - This prophetic period has been, and still is, the main pillar of the Advent faith. It is, therefore, of the utmost importance that we have a correct view of the commencement and termination of this period, in order to understand our present position.

B. C. 457, was the year presented, and clearly proved by Brother Miller, as the true date for the commencement of the 2300 days. It was published to the world by every Second Advent paper in the land, by books, and by public lectures, as the true date. The proof was so very conclusive that those who examined the point with candor embraced it at once. Learned opponents did not, and could not, show that we were incorrect in dating the 2300 days from B. C. 457. With this clearly ascertained date for the commencement of the main pillar of the "ORIGINAL" Advent faith, lecturers went forth united to give the judgment hour cry. This was the date written upon the "chronological chart of the visions of Daniel and John, published by J. V. Himes, 14 Devonshire St."

It was the united testimony of Second Advent lecturers and papers, when standing on "THE ORIGINAL FAITH," that the publication of the chart was a fulfillment of Hab.ii,2,3. If the chart was a subject of prophecy, (and those who deny it leave the original faith,) then it follows that B. C. 457 was the year from which to date the 2300 days. It was necessary that 1843 should be the first published time in order that "the vision" should "tarry," or that there should be a tarrying time, in which the virgin band was to slumber and sleep on the great subject of time, just before they were to be aroused by the Midnight Cry.

There is a seeming contradiction in the language of the Prophet - "though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry," which can be explained only by Second Advent History.

"Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. [This was fulfilled when the first published time was made plain upon the chart.] For the vision is yet for an appointed time, [Mark this. There is "appointed time" connected with the "vision" made "plain upon tables;" and what can it refer to, but the vision of the 2300 days of which it is said, "shut thou up the vision for it shall be for many days," "the time appointed was long," and "at the time appointed the end shall be,"] but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it tarry, [seem to tarry, by reaching into 1844, beyond the first published time,] wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."   {December 1850 James White, Advent Review & Sabbath Herald, 13.8} (Emphasis in orginal)

1850 Chart : “I saw that God was in the publishment of the chart by Brother Nichols. I saw that there was a prophecy of this chart in the Bible, and if this chart is designed for God's people, if it [is] sufficient for one it is for another, and if one needed a new chart painted on a larger scale, all need it just as much.” Ellen G. "The warning has come: Nothing is to be allowed to come in that will disturb the foundation of the faith upon which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and 1844. I was in this message, and ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the light that God has given us. We do not propose to take our feet off the platform on which they were placed as day by day we sought the Lord with earnest prayer, seeking for light. Do you think that I could give up the light that God has given me? It is to be as the Rock of Ages. It has been guiding me ever since it was given." {Ellen G. “We have, as had John, a message to bear of the things which we have seen and heard. God is not giving us a new message. We are to proclaim the message that in 1843 and 1844 brought us out of the other churches.” {RH, January 19, 1905 par. 22}

I saw a company who stood well guarded and firm, giving no countenance to those who would unsettle the established faith of the body. God looked upon them with approbation. I was shown three steps-- the first, second, and third angels' messages. Said my accompanying angel, "Woe to him who shall move a block or stir a pin of these messages. The true understanding of these messages is of vital importance. The destiny of souls hangs upon the manner in which they are received." I was again brought down through these messages, and saw how dearly the people of God had purchased their experience. It had been obtained through much suffering and severe conflict. God had led them along step by step, until He had placed them upon a solid, immovable platform. I saw individuals approach the platform and examine the foundation. Some with rejoicing immediately stepped upon it. Others commenced to find fault with the foundation. They wished improvements made, and then the platform would be more perfect, and the people much happier. Some stepped off the platform to examine it and declared it to be laid wrong. But I saw that nearly all stood firm upon the platform and exhorted those who had stepped off to cease their complaints; for God was the Master Builder, and they were fighting against Him. They recounted the wonderful work of God, which had led them to the firm platform, and in union raised their eyes to heaven and with a loud voice glorified God. This affected some of those who had complained and left the platform, and they with humble look again stepped upon it.  {Early Writings, p. 258.3} (emphasis supplied)

But angels watch the precious dust of this servant of God, and he will come forth at the sound of the last trump. {Early Writings, p. 258}
